Is an HSA Your Best Health Insurance Option?

INDIANAPOLIS —

More Americans will find health savings accounts (HSAs) among their health insurance options this year, whether they participate in an employer-sponsored plan or purchase coverage directly on their own. And chances are these consumers will have more questions than answers: Is an HSA right for me and my family? Can an HSA help us lower our health care costs and our taxes? How does health care reform affect HSAs?

One place to find the answers is www.HSAcenter.com, a convenient, one-stop location for consumers seeking comprehensive, straightforward information on HSAs, how they work, and updates on the impact of health care reform.

Developed by UnitedHealthcare’s Golden Rule Insurance Company, www.HSAcenter.com features user-friendly tools to help consumers learn more about HSAs and estimate potential savings – now and over time – before deciding if an HSA might be the best choice for their families.

According to America’s Health Insurance Plans, as of Jan. 1, 2010, more than 10 million Americans had HSA/high-deductible health plan coverage, and that number continues to grow. A recent survey of large companies by the National Business Group on Health found that 61 percent of employers will offer consumer-directed health plans in 2011, and 20 percent expect to make the consumer-directed health plan the only choice offered to their employees.

Golden Rule’s expertise in the consumer-directed health care market goes back to 1993 when the company introduced the first medical savings account (MSA), considered the predecessor to the HSA. Today, nearly 30 percent of Golden Rule customers are covered by HSA health plans because of the affordability, tax savings and control over their health care spending HSAs offer.

A leading provider of health insurance for individuals and families for more than 60 years, Golden Rule became a UnitedHealthcare company in 2003. UnitedHealthcare’s personal health plans are offered in 40 states and the District of Columbia and marketed under the UnitedHealthOne brand.

Consumers can find out more about HSAs and how they work at www.HSAcenter.com. To speak to a licensed product adviser about HSAs, consumers can call Golden Rule directly at 800-974-4472.
