Licensing/Credentialing Process
Licensing

The State Board Licensing process typically takes 6+ weeks for residents but can stretch to 6 months depending on State of Practice. The process is expedited if part of the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact which offers a voluntary expedited pathway to licensure for qualified physicians who wish to practice in multiple states. Nearly 80% of physicians meet the criteria for licensure through the IMLC. There are currently 24 states and 1 territory and the 31 Medical and Osteopathic Boards participating with the IMLCC.

Credentialing

This will take 3-6 months depending on the facility(s), health plans, and State of practice involved. Many OptumCare business entities utilize CAQH as their repository. This streamlines and centralizes the input, storage and updating of your data for use in obtaining credentials across a wide range of facilities or regulatory bodies.

Here are some tips to ensure the most expedited results from the CAQH process:

  • Review your application carefully to ensure all information is current and accurate.

  • Credentialing contact information should reflect the person who can review and update your application.

  • Include a copy of the following documents in the supporting documentation of your CAQH application: Current Malpractice Face Sheet, State License, DEA (DEA must be registered in State of intended practice) and Release Form.

  • Work History — Provide five years of work history in month/year format. Gaps in work history greater than six months must be explained.

  • Peer References – Provide three peer references on your CAQH application.

  • Hospital privileges — OptumCare requires providers to have active hospital privileges or an acceptable plan of admission. Acceptable plans of admission include:

    • Utilization of a hospitalist group at a participating hospital. (Please provide the name of the participating hospital.)

    • Another participating physician admitting on the practitioner’s behalf. (Please provide the name of the admitting physician.)

  • Ensure your attestation is current — Re-attestation is required every 120 days.

  • Authorize OptumCare to view your CAQH application following your formal application is submitted at workatoptumcare.com and you are confirmed for a formal interview by your OptumCare/UHG Recruiter.
