"At UnitedHealth Group, we're using our AI superpowers in three core ways: we are simplifying the administration processes (including consumer experiences); building new data science platforms; and offering medical and clinical insights to help physicians and clinicians focus on what they do best.

"Let’s talk about real people and real stories. Jacob, like many of our members, needs to find care for his daughter whose stomach hurts. Our AI-enhanced search experience helps him locate the best care, faster by using our data to personalize his search results, providing him with high-quality, low-cost, in-network providers who specialize in the exact care his daughter needs.

"Now, let’s imagine Lisa, a nurse practitioner, who is making a routine house call visit. Her goal is to provide the right care for the right person at the right time. In a capability we have developed to identify health risks, Lisa pulls her patient’s profile up on her tablet and sees that the patient may be at risk for type 2 diabetes. Lisa can now determine if an A1C test is appropriate. AI is supporting Lisa with information, helping reduce the likelihood of a missed diagnosis, not making a clinical decision. Lisa makes the final decision.

Using AI Responsibly

AI/ML are important technologies with the potential to positively impact health care, but we believe they must be explainable, expert-informed and used responsibly. Through our Responsible Use of AI (RUAI) Program, we consider, identify, and address potential risk of unintended consequences that could impact our members, patients, customers, or consumers. This effort prioritizes clinical oversight and establishes standards for developers and data scientists to ensure our tools are developed and implemented in a way that ensures accuracy, fairness, security, privacy, ethics, and transparency.
