Why did you decide to pursue medicine as a career?

A close friend of my family was an orthopedic surgeon. I was always fascinated by the stories he told me, and coupled with my interest in science, this is where my path led me.

Had you not chosen medicine, what would you do?

Most likely a position in basic science research. Prior to medical school, I was a graduate student in marine biology. I really enjoyed that time period, but the job prospects were limited. My research was a cell biology topic primarily, and most of the work was done at Medical University of South Carolina.

If you were to change medical specialties, what would you choose?

MSK Radiology.

How is most of your time spent away from work?

Mostly it revolves around my four kids’ schedules or working around the house. My wife and I have a habit of buying “fixer-uppers.”

Describe your perfect day off?

I live about 60 miles from either the mountains or the coast. Depending on the time of year, either location makes for a great day.

Tell me the best part about being a physician?

Improving the quality of life for patients/members and solving complex problems with the application of science.

What would you change about healthcare and the practice of medicine to make it work better?

Improving efficiencies in care coordination, as well as reduce waste. My interests have changed somewhat as I’ve transitioned away from practice to the managed care world, but these two themes have remained consistent.
