Our People

Through our people and grassroots community partnerships, we help build healthier communities through deep, personal involvement in improving the health and welfare of the neighborhoods where we live and work.

Our employee social responsibility program, giving!, enlists the passions and expertise of our people worldwide, encouraging them to address issues they care deeply about and support organizations, locally, nationally or internationally. The contributions our people make of their time, talent and money to charitable causes and organizations of their choice are supported year round. UnitedHealth Group magnifies their contributions through a 1:1 match for employee donations to most nonprofits; and, after tracking 30 hours of volunteer time, a $500 grant automatically goes to the nonprofits of the employee's choice.

Our People in Action

Our employees around the world are encouraged to engage in volunteer and charitable giving activities that directly impact their local communities, like feeding the hungry, helping parents and children and connecting individuals to care. Here are a few examples that highlight how our employees are helping build healthier communities:

Feeding the Hungry

  • Employees provided nearly 900,000 meals to families and individuals in need through volunteer participation in food drives and through work in food banks, agencies and mobile pantries, including packing 17,496 meals for needy families overseas.
  • In the Twin Cities, employees supported The Family Partnership by hosting an event where they helped assemble 1,000 healthy snacks and 200 therapy journals to donate to the organization. The Family Partnership is a social services organization that provides counseling for people struggling with abuse, depression, anxiety, trauma, grief/loss and life transitions.

Connecting Individuals to Care

When teachers at St. Alberts High School in Hyderabad, India, discovered that chronic absenteeism among their young students was primarily due to health issues, one of the administrators — a former UnitedHealth Group employee — suggested that the current employees living and working in the city might be willing to help with eye exams for the children. Employees responded quickly and generously, enlisting their partners at Smile on Wheels and Help-Age India. At events organized and staffed by employee volunteers, schoolchildren received general medical, eye and dental exams. Hundreds of people received medical check-ups with physicians offering prescriptions and encouraging ongoing care.

Helping Parents and Children

  • More than 135,000 kids now have access to safe places to play as a result of employees helping build playgrounds across various communities.
  • Employees in Irvine, Calif., came together to assemble and decorate 85 Sweet Cases, for Together We Rise, a nonprofit organization focused on improving the lives of foster children in America.
  • In Overland Park, Kans., employees coordinated a diaper drive and packaging event where they donated more than 5,500 diapers to the local diaper bank for distribution to families in need.
  • In Gurgaon, India, employees are giving their time and funding to help break the cycle of illiteracy and poverty. Teaming up with Lakshyam, a nongovernmental organization dedicated to the welfare of children and the empowerment of disadvantaged women; and Udaan, a local safe home for homeless children, employees regularly volunteer to support the educational, emotional and health needs of at-risk children in their community.
