Cultivating Healthy Food Habits in South Houston

Published August 30, 2017

See how we're working with Recipe for Success to educate and encourage the local community to establish healthy food habits and strengthen our commitment to build healthier communities where we work and live.

Recipe for Success, United Health Foundation and local UnitedHealthcare employees are addressing the issue of food deserts in the Sunnyside neighborhood of south Houston. Food deserts are geographic areas where access to affordable, healthy food is restricted or nonexistent, often due to the absence of grocery stores within convenient travelling distance.

"Helping people live healthier lives doesn't happen just by insuring people… It's not just a business goal – it's our responsibility to be out in the community," says Rodolfo Guerra, executive director, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Texas.
