  • Holiday Hope events provide nearly 5,000 families in Detroit, Flint and Lansing with food, coats, essential living items and toys

On Saturday, Nov. 19, and Sunday, Nov. 20, the Magic Johnson Foundation and UnitedHealthcare will hold three Holiday Hope events to provide Michigan families with food, holiday trimmings, coats, essential living items and toys.

Nearly 5,000 families are expected to participate in the events in Lansing, Flint and Detroit. Earvin "Magic" Johnson, community leaders and UnitedHealthcare volunteers will attend the Lansing and Flint events. Community leaders, UnitedHealthcare volunteers and other partner volunteers will attend the Detroit event.

This is the third year of Holiday Hope events for Magic Johnson Foundation and the second year of a three-year partnership with UnitedHealthcare. An additional $30,000 grant by UnitedHealthcare helped the foundation expand its efforts this year to include Flint.

"Since 2014, Holiday Hope has served more than 24,000 Michigan residents with nearly $2 million worth of food, turkeys, toys, coats and personal care items," said Johnson, founder of Magic Johnson Foundation and Michigan native. "UnitedHealthcare and other community partners have joined us in bringing hope and cheer to Michigan communities. I couldn't enjoy the holidays without providing some help to families in the state where I grew up."

"Since its inception, the Magic Johnson Foundation has worked to improve the quality of life in our communities," said Dennis Mouras, CEO of UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Michigan. "UnitedHealthcare is grateful for the opportunity to support the Magic Johnson Foundation and bring holiday cheer to people throughout Michigan."

Last year, nearly 3,000 Detroit and Lansing families were provided with holiday assistance through the Magic Johnson Foundation and UnitedHealthcare partnership. In total, UnitedHealthcare has donated over $400,000 to support Holiday Hope – the largest multiyear grant to the Magic Johnson Foundation by a corporation in Michigan.
