UnitedHealthcare Recognizes Employers for Successful Worksite Wellness Programs

Published July 28, 2015

UnitedHealthcare has announced the winners of its “Well Deserved” award, an annual honor given to employers that have implemented innovative, industry-leading worksite wellness programs that helped improve their employees’ health and well-being.

Award winners offered a variety of innovative wellness initiatives such as bilingual nurse liaisons, free yoga classes, weight loss challenges, incentives such as gift cards and premium reductions, and onsite flu shots and mammography screenings.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, worksite wellness programs “can improve employee satisfaction, reduce stress, decrease absenteeism and increase productivity.”  UnitedHealthcare data reveal that worksite wellness programs may result in lower medical costs and better primary and preventive health care decisions for employees who participate.

“UnitedHealthcare congratulates these companies for encouraging a culture of health at their workplaces and helping their employees live healthier lives,” said Carol Calvin, RN, MS, CPQH, UnitedHealthcare’s national director of health strategies. “A healthier and more engaged workforce can lead to better health, as well as increased employee satisfaction and productivity.”

A recent employer survey conducted by the National Business Group on Health and Fidelity Investments revealed that 79 percent of employers surveyed will offer incentives in 2015, compared with 63 percent in 2010. About 95 percent of employers plan to expand or maintain investment in health improvement programs.

This is UnitedHealthcare’s seventh year of recognizing employer customers with Well Deserved awards for their outstanding health and wellness programs, working with an external broker review panel to review and judge all applicants.

Among the Well Deserved award winners are American Greetings, based in Cleveland, and Graebel Companies, based in Aurora, Colo. Both employers have won the “Well Deserved” award twice and were presented with a Golden Apple award to honor this multiyear distinction.
