UnitedHealth Group (NYSE: UNH), the nation’s leading health benefits and services company, announced today it is creating nearly 1,500 new jobs in Texas, expanding its already significant presence in the state.
The new jobs include 800 at a new solution center in Irving for Connextions, a leading technology and business services partner to the health care industry and a part of UnitedHealth Group’s Optum® health services business. The Irving facility will open in July.
The announcement was made at a news conference today attended by Texas Gov. Rick Perry and Stephen J. Hemsley, CEO of UnitedHealth Group, at Connextions’ new facility at 5150 Regent Boulevard next to Dallas-Ft. Worth International Airport.
In addition to the Connextions jobs, UnitedHealth Group businesses announced 330 jobs in the Houston area at Optum’s pharmacy benefit management business, and 250 jobs in San Antonio and 115 jobs in Harlingen being created by UnitedHealthcare, UnitedHealth Group’s health benefits business.
“We have chosen to expand our business in Texas because of this state’s determination to bring dependable, rewarding employment to the people who live here and Texas’ commitment to improving access to higher-quality health care for consumers,” Hemsley said.
Currently, UnitedHealth Group employs nearly 11,000 Texans and serves more than 3.3 million people in the state with a health care network of nearly 500 hospitals and more than 36,800 physicians and other care professionals statewide.
“This is an employer that knows Texas and knows Texans,” Gov. Perry said. “They’ve witnessed first-hand what we have to offer, and as a result, they’re continuing to invest their future in the Lone Star State. This vote of confidence affirms our efforts to create a jobs-friendly climate that will attract and keep employers like UnitedHealth Group here in Texas.”
“Connextions is excited to expand our operations to Texas as we meet growing demand for our insurance carrier and exchange business,” said Steve Auerbach, president of Connextions, an Optum company. “Metro Dallas is a great place for us to recruit the talented, committed individuals who help consumers navigate very important and personal decisions related to their health care.”
Connextions uses a national network of 7,000 employees to power health insurance exchanges and help carriers enroll, retain and provide service to their members. The company helps consumers understand the complex and often confusing information they need to select the right health plan and manage their benefits, health and wellness.
Connextions has invested $5.5 million in the company’s 76,400-square-foot solution center in Irving, which will be ready for occupancy in mid-July.
“By helping consumers navigate the complex health care system, Connextions plays a critical role in Optum’s mission to make the system work better for everyone,” said Larry Renfro, executive vice president of UnitedHealth Group and CEO of Optum. “We appreciate the efforts and support of Gov. Perry and the City of Irving as we expand our presence in Texas through Connextions’ new solution center.”
Connextions has already begun recruiting in metro Dallas for 750 licensed and non-licensed insurance agents, who will earn an average $30,000-$40,000 salary, as well as additional trainers, managers and operational staff. The company provides free College of Insurance training to eligible applicants – an investment of about $500 per person – to prepare them to take state licensing exams for health insurance and Medicare supplemental sales.
