  • More than 600 turkeys and 1,634 pounds of food collected at Foodshare's Hartford "Turkey Tuesday" drive, hosted by Bank of America, Stop and Shop and UnitedHealthcare
  • Foodshare to continue accepting turkeys and other food through Tuesday, Nov. 22, for hungry families in time for Thanksgiving

More than 15,000 families in Hartford and Tolland counties will be able to sit down to Thanksgiving dinner thanks to the generosity of Hartford employers and residents who stopped by 185 Asylum St. this morning to drop off turkeys and other holiday food items, and donate money for additional meals.

Over the course of the four-hour "Turkey Tuesday" food and fund drive, hundreds of people dropped off turkeys, stuffing, cranberry sauce and other holiday food items. The food will be distributed to families in need in Hartford and Tolland counties.

"Thanksgiving is a holiday for everyone. We want to thank everyone who has stepped up to help our friends and neighbors celebrate a traditional Thanksgiving next week. We are also grateful for the many people who recognize that hunger is a year-round issue, and have been able to make an additional financial gift," said James Arena-DeRosa, president and CEO of Foodshare. "A special thank you to our friends at Bank of America, Stop and Shop and UnitedHealthcare for their ongoing support."

Foodshare will continue to collect and distribute food for Thanksgiving until Tuesday, Nov. 22. The food bank's Bloomfield distribution center is accepting donations and has extended its hours of operation beginning Wednesday, Nov. 16. "Organizations like Foodshare help make our communities stronger by supporting families in need," said Kevin Cunningham, president, State of Connecticut, Bank of America. "Through the dedication of our volunteers and partners at Turkey Tuesday, more than 15,000 local families will be able to share a nice meal together this Thanksgiving."

"UnitedHealthcare is grateful for the opportunity to partner with Foodshare, Bank of America and Stop and Shop so families can enjoy a Thanksgiving meal with all the trimmings," said Craig LaFiandra of UnitedHealthcare.

UnitedHealthcare and Optum employee volunteers helped gather donations and load the Foodshare truck with turkeys and other food donations, and UnitedHealthcare conducted its own food drive among its more than 2,000 Hartford-based employees at its 185 Asylum St. office.
