A discussion with our employee veterans
UnitedHealth Group is proud that so many veterans choose to work here. We know that those who serve or have served have special skills that can be applied in helping deliver best-in-class health care benefits and services. Here’s what they have to say about transitioning into a civilian career here.
Q: What type of service did/do you do in the military?
Jennifer: I’m currently a Traditional Guardsman in the National Guard.
Zach: I was in the army for 5 years. I was actually stationed in Italy and Korea. I’ve been at Optum 2 years, just this past month.
Tracy: I served 26 years as a Navy Officer.
Sam: I was in the army for 8 years.
Adam: Army too.
Q: How has your military experience helped you in a career here?
Zach: I think the ability to set a goal or a vision and execute. That’s what has helped me in project management. A lot of the work we do in the military is similar. It’s setting a task or goal and setting up the organization to achieve it. So, drive for results, and certainly discipline helps. The leadership you learn in the military definitely serves well.
Tracy: I think as veterans we come with a certain set of skills and qualities, like resilience. We’re also very focused on serving our country, and accomplishing our mission.
Adam: Discipline – number one. Taking initiative; being a self-starter. Qualities along those lines for sure.
Sam: The leadership skills I acquired in the military really helped me in my role here at UnitedHealth Group. The background I have understanding the larger global picture of a mission ahead helps me keep my eyes on the ball and get the work done.
Q: The UnitedHealth Group mission is very important to the company. What does it mean to you as a veteran and employee?
Jennifer: I’ve been in the military for 26 years and come from a military family. Purpose, goal, and mission are really important to me. If those things are there then I have the drive to do just about anything.
Tracy: UnitedHealth Group is a global company, but it has a very focused mission on helping people live healthier lives and making the health system work better for everyone. I think that’s something we can all get around.
Adam: Our mission to make the health care system work better for everyone resonates with me. As far as the people that I interact with every day, everything we do rolls up into trying to solve this big healthcare problem.
Sam: I’m really encouraged by our culture and our values here that actually align very, very closely with the Army’s. Definitely the whole concept of being a part of something bigger.
