Stephen J. Hemsley

Stephen Hemsley was named chief executive officer and president, UnitedHealth Group, on Nov. 30, 2006. He had previously served as president and chief operating officer, UnitedHealth Group, and is a member of the company’s board of directors. Hemsley joined the company in June 1997.

Gail Boudreaux assumed overall responsibility for the four benefits businesses that comprise UnitedHealthcare in 2011. She joined UnitedHealth Group in May 2008 as an executive vice president and as president of UnitedHealthcare. Boudreaux was formerly executive vice president of Health Care Services Corporation (HCSC) and prior to that served as president of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois, a division of HCSC. Before joining HCSC she held various positions at Aetna, including senior vice president of Aetna Group Insurance and vice president of Customer Service.

 


 

Larry C. Renfro

Larry Renfro is chief executive officer of Optum, UnitedHealth Group's health services platform, overseeing OptumInsight, OptumHealth and Optum Rx. Renfro joined the company in January 2009 and has served as chief executive officer Public and Senior Markets Group and worked in the office of the CEO at UnitedHealth Group coordinating projects in new areas of growth and development.

Renfro was formerly a senior executive officer at Fidelity Investments and a member of the Fidelity Executive Committee. He was president and chief executive officer of AARP Services, Inc., before he rejoined Fidelity in 2008. Renfro has also held senior executive positions at NewRiver, Inc.; State Street Bank & Trust; and Allmerica Financial.

 


 

Edson Bueno, M.D.

Edson Bueno, M.D., is the founder, president, CEO and chairman of Amil Participações S.A., which became a subsidiary of UnitedHealth Group in October 2012. Founded in 1978, Amil is the largest health care organization in Brazil, currently assisting more than 5 million people. Dr. Bueno holds a medical degree from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, with specialization in general surgery. He joined UnitedHealth Group's board of directors on October 29, 2012.

 

 


 

David S. Wichmann

David Wichmann assumed the position of chief financial officer of the enterprise in 2011, while retaining his existing roles and responsibilities as President, UnitedHealth Group Operations and Technology. He also assists in the oversight of UnitedHealth Group Corporate functions, including the company's international efforts. In May 2008, Wichmann was named president of UnitedHealth Group Operations and he has served as executive vice president of the enterprise since 2006. He previously held positions as president, UnitedHealthcare; president and chief executive officer, Specialized Care Services (now OptumHealth); and senior vice president, Corporate Development. Prior to joining UnitedHealth Group in 1998, Wichmann was a partner with Arthur Andersen.

 


 

Marianne D. Short

Marianne D. Short was appointed executive vice president and chief legal officer of UnitedHealth Group in January 2013. She is responsible for overseeing legal, regulatory and compliance matters across the enterprise. Prior to joining the company, Ms. Short was the managing partner at Dorsey & Whitney LLP for six years, a partner in the trial department, co-chair of the firm’s Appellate and Health Litigation practice groups and a member of the American College of Trial Lawyers and the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers. From 1988-2000, she was a judge on the Minnesota Court of Appeals, authoring more than 900 opinions in virtually every area of civil and criminal law. She has more than 35 years of courtroom experiences from her work on the court, the Dorsey firm and the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office.  

 


 

William A. Munsell

William Munsell joined the Office of the CEO in 2011 to apply the depth of his leadership experience and expertise more broadly to the oversight of the company at the enterprise level, while continuing his engagement in the strategy related to our health services agenda and increasing his direct involvement in corporate development activities. Beginning in 2007 Munsell became president of the Enterprise Services Group (now Health Services), which includes OptumHealth, Ingenix and Prescription Solutions. He was appointed executive vice president, UnitedHealth Group, in December 2006. Previously, Munsell held the positions of chief executive officer, Specialized Care Services (now OptumHealth), and chief administrative officer, UnitedHealthcare. He joined UnitedHealth Group in 1997 and brings more than 25 years of experience in operations, finance, treasury, executive management and business processes to the company.

 


 

Anthony Welters

In 2011, Anthony Welters, joined the Office of the CEO to focus more closely at the enterprise level on public, governmental and political positioning and image, matters of reputational interest or impact, special regulatory matters, and oversight and alignment of brand, reputation and market engagement activities. In September 2007, Anthony Welters was named president and chief executive officer of the Public and Senior Markets Group, which included the businesses serving government-sponsored health programs, now known as UnitedHealthcare Medicare & Retirement and UnitedHealthcare Community & State. He was appointed executive vice president, UnitedHealth Group, in December 2006. Welters had previously been president, chief executive officer of AmeriChoice, which was acquired by UnitedHealth Group in 2002. Mr. Welters founded AmeriChoice in 1989. Prior to his role with AmeriChoice, Welters held a number of senior positions in the federal government and in private industry.

 


 

Eric S. Rangen

Eric Rangen was elected senior vice president and chief accounting officer in December 2006. Prior to joining UnitedHealth Group, Rangen was executive vice president, chief financial officer and also served as principal accounting officer at Alliant Techsystems.

 


 

Jeannine M. Rivet

Jeannine Rivet was named executive vice president, UnitedHealth Group, in January 2001, and currently works with all company business segments in areas focused on strategic and business relationship management, customer and public relations, social responsibility and nursing advancement. She has served as chief executive officer and president, Optum (now part of OptumHealth), chief executive officer, Ingenix, and chief executive officer, UnitedHealthcare. Before joining UnitedHealth Group, Rivet served as vice president, Group Operations, The Prudential Insurance Company of America.

 


 

Simon Stevens

In January 2009, Simon Stevens was named executive vice president, UnitedHealth Group and president Global Health, with major responsibilities in the areas of health care reform and global health interests. Since late 2006, Stevens has served as chief executive officer, Ovations. His executive experience in health care spans twenty years of service, in hospitals, primary care and as a payer, in the private and public sectors, both in the United States and internationally.

 


 

Lori Sweere

Lori Sweere was appointed executive vice president, Human Capital, UnitedHealth Group, in May 2007. Previously, Sweere was executive vice president, human resources, for CNA Financial Corporation, in Chicago, Ill. Prior to CNA, Sweere held human resources positions for The St. Paul Companies, St. Paul, Minn., and National Computer Systems in Eden Prairie, Minn.

 


 

John S. Penshorn

John Penshorn, senior vice president, has managed UnitedHealth Group’s capital markets relationships since December 1998. Previously, Penshorn followed health services equities as a stock analyst at Piper Jaffray.

 


 

Don Nathan

Senior Vice President and Chief Communications Officer

Don Nathan joined UnitedHealth Group as senior vice president, chief communications officer, effective May 28, 2007. He is responsible for all internal and external communications. Nathan was formerly a strategic communications consultant with Robinson Lerer & Montgomery, beginning in 1991, and was a partner at the firm for ten years. Previously, Nathan worked on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., serving in a number of different Congressional and campaign capacities.
