Innovation is at the very core of our organization; it is in the fabric of what we do. Creative thinking is part of our daily playbook. Every day, our commitment is to make the health care system stronger, smarter, and ultimately — work better. Our innovations empower consumers, care providers, plan sponsors, scientists and government to work together to improve health and lower medical costs, connecting them with engaging tools, programs and technology. For example, at UnitedHealthcare, we offer an interactive incentive program, accessible on all smartphones, to help expectant moms keep critical prenatal and infant wellness appointments. Our new “exergaming” initiative in schools leverages popular video game technology in gym classes to help kids stay fit and healthy. At Optum, we create new and better ways for care providers to use information to manage patients and entire populations. And our Optum Labs facility is working on scientific breakthroughs, such as more effective screening for infectious diseases like Hepatitis C.

The initiatives illustrated in this report represent a small sampling of the robust pipeline of innovative concepts we test or launch each year. As you learn more about these efforts, we hope you share our excitement about the possibilities that lie ahead to create a more integrated, proactive and personalized health system for all.

Sincerely,
Gail Boudreaux and Andy Slavitt
